The US Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) will work with the General Services Administration to list the house for public auction, with a target of later this spring or early summer for a one-to-two-month auction. If the auction proceeds and is successful, the house would be relocated or repurposed this year, and if not successful, the Service will abate lead and asbestos hazards and remove the house. The Refuge considered reimagining the visitor experience at the Miller House, but it was ultimately decided that the best use of the building is employee and volunteer housing. The Refuge will be constructing a welcoming new Nature Center at the current location of the National Elk Refuge and Greater Yellowstone Visitor Center in 2025. This new facility will better meet visitor needs and align with the mission of the Refuge. Our guests can take part in our commitment to high-quality seafood not only by dining with us, but also by shopping at our retail markets.

Availability of employee housing has been an ongoing struggle for the Refuge, as it has been for the broader community. The Miller House will serve as critical housing for seasonal Refuge staff and volunteers. Many of Pocatello and Chubbuck’s neighborhoods are built in the urban-wildland interface shared with wildlife, and wildlife will even move into and through town. In this case, it was likely that the young adult lion was seeking prey like urban deer, marmots, or even pets.

Many new faces enjoyed the festive atmosphere and commented on how nice the hatchery is and all the fish in the Aquariums. Knowing that this event reached so many people in a positive way and spread holiday cheer, provides a wonderful gift to the hatchery staff and Fish and Wildlife Service. Removal of the Pink House would create an opportunity to enhance both the future resiliency and public access opportunities of this area. This would include providing a small parking area on the existing footprint of the driveway and constructing an accessible, low-profile viewing area. An area that has long been closed to public access would afford a unique opportunity for people of all abilities to experience and learn about the Great Marsh ecosystem from a unique vantage point.

Further, the property has become an attractive nuisance, requiring frequent law enforcement patrols and repair work due to vandalism. Service maintenance staff and funds are increasingly required to maintain structural stability and safety. The house has a permanently flooded basement, is within an active flood zone, and recent sea level rise predictions indicate flooding will be even more severe in the years to come.
